The Longview community is mourning after the deadly implosion at the Nippon pulp and paper facility, where multiple workers are now believed dead following Tuesday’s catastrophic industrial disaster. While the official death toll initially remained at one, Washington State Sen. Jeff Wilson said updated information from emergency briefings indicated: Six deaths had been confirmed Three additional workers remained missing and presumed dead At least nine others were hospitalized, several with severe chemical burns TOP STORY: LONGVIEW COMMUNITY DEVASTATED Wilson, whose son works at the Nippon site, said the tragedy is deeply personal for the Longview community. According to Wilson: “This isn’t business first. It still is about people.” Wilson explained: He worked at the site for roughly 26 years as a contractor He personally knows many employees at the facility Safety procedures at the plant were typically taken very seriously He added: “I have never seen a tank rupture like this on its own.” Wilson questioned: ➡️ How the tank suddenly leaned and imploded or exploded ➡️ Why containment systems were overwhelmed ➡️ What exactly triggered the catastrophic failure RECOVERY OPERATIONS STILL UNDERWAY According to the report: Emergency crews were unable to safely reach parts of the debris field Wednesday The damaged tank area remained unstable Recovery operations for missing workers were continuing Wilson urged community members to stay away from the site while investigators and emergency crews worked. According to Wilson: “There are still many people that drive down to this facility wanting to see something, wanting to just be near the site.” He added: “We’ve got to get time to get them their answers.” CANDLELIGHT VIGIL DRAWS HUNDREDS Roughly 300 people gathered at RA Long Park for a candlelight vigil honoring: Workers killed in the disaster Injured employees Those still missing According to Wilson: The crowd was emotional and somber Many attendees carried photographs of missing workers Families throughout Longview were personally affected Wilson said: “Those other employees and workers that are still gone, they’re not going to come home tonight ever.” LABOR & INDUSTRIES CONFIRMS PRIOR INVESTIGATIONS Washington Labor & Industries confirmed: A March investigation had been opened involving a complaint about a valve on an aqua ammonia clarifier tank Another investigation opened in May involving a sinkhole caused by a failed drain Officials stated: ➡️ Neither complaint involved the specific tank that imploded ➡️ No prior complaints had been filed regarding the failed tank itself Authorities say the full investigation into the cause of the disaster could take significant time.
