DESCRIPTION
Seattle business leaders are warning that the city's economic challenges are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Downtown office vacancy rates have climbed above 30%, commercial property values have fallen by billions of dollars, and an estimated 40,000 jobs have disappeared from downtown Seattle over the past four years.
According to Downtown Seattle Association President John Scholes, the impacts extend far beyond office building owners. Falling property values can weaken the city's tax base, potentially shifting more of the burden onto residents and businesses.
The concerns come as companies continue expanding outside Washington and business leaders call for policies that make Seattle more competitive for employers, investment, and job creation.
