Gov. Bob Ferguson Faces Pressure To Join Federal School Tax Credit Program

More than 30 states have already announced plans to participate in a new federal scholarship tax credit program, but Washington has yet to opt in. Supporters say the initiative could generate more than $700 million annually for students across the state while allowing eligible taxpayers to claim up to $1,700 in federal tax credits for donations to scholarship-granting organizations. Washington Policy Center's Vicki Murray argues that failing to join the program would send federal tax dollars to participating states instead of benefiting Washington students. The scholarships could support expenses for public, charter, private, and homeschool students. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal has expressed concerns about accountability, oversight, and the possibility that scholarship funds could support private or religious education. Gov.
