Seattle Crime Hotspot Draws Increased Scrutiny

Advocates on the front lines of Seattle's sex trafficking crisis say victims are getting younger and traffickers are becoming more violent. Christine Moreland, executive director of The More We Love, says her organization's shelter in Renton is operating at full capacity after receiving 128 crisis calls in just 12 days. The nonprofit currently serves 22 women and 29 children and is working to expand its shelter capacity to meet growing demand. Moreland says Washington lacks dedicated shelter beds for trafficked youth and warns that current laws and policies are failing to hold traffickers accountable. She also expressed frustration that the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office was denied funding requests for additional staff dedicated to investigating and prosecuting trafficking cases. Meanwhile, Seattle's latest emphasis patrol along Aurora Avenue identified three minors in need of protective services and led to the arrest of six individuals accused of attempting to exploit children.
