DESCRIPTION
Allegheny County taxpayers are footing the bill for millions in public employee leave payouts, and the numbers are raising serious questions about government spending.
A new investigation by The Center Square reveals that 16 county workers received more than $50,000 each in unused leave payouts last year, with the largest payout reaching nearly $80,000. Most of the biggest payouts came from county police, the sheriff’s office, and the jail.
In total, Allegheny County paid out $3.3 million to 475 employees in unused sick and vacation leave.
The report highlights growing concerns over government payroll costs, public employee benefits, and whether taxpayers are getting value for the money being spent.
Key questions:
Are these benefits sustainable?
Is this fair to taxpayers?
Should governments reform leave payout policies?
Watch for the full breakdown and economic impact.
