DESCRIPTION
Seattle leaders are moving forward with a new public safety plan aimed at reducing crime along Aurora Avenue after months of complaints from residents and business owners.
The proposal would allow residential street closures near Aurora Avenue while increasing police presence in an effort to reduce shootings and other criminal activity. Supporters say temporary neighborhood road closures previously resulted in fewer incidents, prompting city leaders to pursue a broader strategy.
Community advocates, however, argue that lasting improvements will require more than street closures. They say law enforcement must also target organized criminal networks, hold offenders accountable, and provide long-term support for victims if Seattle hopes to reduce crime in the area.
The Seattle City Council is expected to consider the proposal later this month.
