Seattle Democrats Clash Over Universal Free School Lunches

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s plan to provide free school lunches to every student in Seattle Public Schools is facing new opposition just weeks before the program was expected to begin. The universal lunch program is funded through a voter-approved levy and was scheduled to launch with the upcoming school year. However, Seattle City Council President Joy Hollingsworth is proposing that at least some of the funding be redirected toward after-school and weekend food programs focused specifically on Black children and communities in South Seattle. Hollingsworth argues that food insecurity is connected to broader disparities involving education, household income, and gun violence. She has also drawn attention for describing part of her policy agenda as a “Black budget,” referring to city spending specifically designated to address racial disparities. The debate raises larger questions about whether Seattle should continue with a universal school lunch program or direct taxpayer funding toward targeted programs based on race and neighborhood. It may also lead to legal scrutiny as other race-based programs in Washington face constitutional challenges and federal review.
