New Data Shows Seattle Hotel Occupancy Fell During the FIFA World Cup

New hotel industry data reveal that Seattle hotels sold fewer rooms during the 2026 FIFA World Cup than they did during the same period last year, raising new questions about the tournament's short-term economic impact. According to new reporting, hotel occupancy averaged between roughly 60% and 85% during Seattle's six World Cup match days. Overall occupancy declined approximately 7% in June and 5.7% in July compared with the same months in 2025. Hotel operators were able to offset some of those losses by charging significantly higher room rates during match days. However, many hotels had reserved large blocks of rooms after FIFA projected exceptionally strong demand, leading some operators to turn away conventions and conferences that traditionally visit Seattle during the busy summer season. When many of those anticipated bookings failed to materialize, hotels were unable to recover much of the convention business they had declined earlier in the year. Despite the mixed hotel numbers, downtown Seattle still experienced enormous activity during the tournament. More than three million people visited downtown Seattle across six World Cup match days. Downtown Seattle Association President and CEO John Scholes described the event as a long-term success, pointing to investments in Seattle's waterfront, transit system, walkability and downtown stadium district as major reasons visitors reported positive experiences. Many visitors praised Seattle's scenery, waterfront, public spaces and overall atmosphere, suggesting the World Cup may generate repeat tourism in the years ahead even if the immediate hotel results fell short of expectations. As additional economic reports are released over the coming weeks and months, policymakers, business leaders and tourism officials will continue evaluating whether Seattle's World Cup delivered the long-term economic benefits many anticipated.
