An investigative review of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul's office found that it spent more than $2 million on private law firms in recent years, primarily to defend the state in lawsuits involving prison officials. The spending has drawn attention because the Attorney General's office already employs roughly 450 attorneys. The investigation also found that several of the outside law firms awarded contracts had made campaign contributions to Attorney General Raoul, either through the firms themselves or individual attorneys.
