Federal Way Crime Drops 21% as Vehicle Theft Falls 80%

New crime data from Federal Way show major declines across several key categories, including a 21% overall drop compared with the same period last year. Mayor Jim Ferrell says motor vehicle theft has fallen 80% since 2023, while robbery is down 71%, burglary is down 60% and aggravated assault is down 34%. Ferrell credits the work of Federal Way police and changes to Washington’s police-pursuit law. The state previously required probable cause before officers could pursue in many cases, a standard law enforcement agencies argued made it difficult to stop fleeing suspects. After more than 423,000 Washington residents signed an initiative supporting broader pursuit authority, lawmakers restored reasonable suspicion as the threshold in qualifying cases. Federal Way is not the only jurisdiction linking lower crime rates to that policy change. Other local agencies and the Washington State Patrol have made similar arguments. Despite the encouraging crime numbers, Washington continues to struggle with low crime-clearance rates and police staffing shortages. Between 2022 and 2025, tens of thousands of violent crimes reportedly remained unsolved, including homicides, aggravated assaults, rapes and robberies.
