Washington Funds New Environmental Study With Climate Commitment Act Money

Washington is moving forward with an $800,000 taxpayer-funded study examining what it would take to replace the energy generated by the four Lower Snake River dams—even after President Donald Trump revoked the Biden administration's effort to advance dam removal. The Washington State Department of Commerce is seeking proposals to evaluate how much new wind, solar and battery storage would be required if the dams were removed, along with the transportation impacts of replacing barge traffic with trucks. The study is being funded through Washington's Climate Commitment Act. Supporters of the dams argue they generate enough electricity to power roughly 800,000 homes while providing reliable carbon-free energy, supporting agricultural shipping and reducing highway congestion. Critics have long argued the dams affect salmon migration, though the facilities include fish ladders and other fish-passage improvements. Mountain States Policy Center President Chris Cargill argues the study asks the wrong question, saying the focus should be on whether removing the dams is realistic given that the federal government ultimately controls their future.
