DESCRIPTION
Parents and public schools are at the center of a growing legal battle over student names, pronouns, parental notification and taxpayer-funded education.
The Liberty Justice Center has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Maryland case involving a school district policy requiring staff to use students’ requested names and pronouns while limiting disclosure to parents. The organization has also sent demand letters to officials in Washington, Illinois, New York and New Jersey over similar policies.
The fight raises major questions about parental rights, constitutional protections, federal law and the authority of public schools receiving taxpayer funding.
We examine the Supreme Court cases, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the potential for additional litigation and what these policies could mean for parents, schools and taxpayers across the country.
