Taxpayer Funding to Nonprofits Has More Than Doubled

Taxpayer funding of nonprofits has more than doubled over the past decade, rising from $149 billion in 2016 to $319 billion in 2022. The Center Square examines how billions of taxpayer dollars are flowing to nonprofit organizations, including questions about executive compensation, conflicts of interest and whether taxpayers are receiving adequate accountability for how their money is spent. In North Carolina, taxpayer funding went to a nonprofit promoting gender-affirming care for minors, despite state restrictions on medical transition treatments for children.
