Election integrity is becoming one of the biggest political and legal battles heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Five states are holding primaries today, but voters face very different rules for proving who they are at the polls. Meanwhile, the fight over the federal Save America Act is intensifying, with proposals involving voter ID, proof of citizenship, voter registration and voter-roll requirements. The debate goes far beyond politics. Changing election requirements can create new administrative responsibilities for state and local governments, potentially affecting how election systems are funded, operated and maintained by taxpayers.
