Washington’s labor market showed signs of improvement in July, with the state adding an estimated 21,100 seasonally adjusted jobs and the unemployment rate declining from 5.2% to 5%, according to the Washington Employment Security Department.
ESD Chief Labor Economist Anneliese Vance-Sherman says Washington’s unemployment rate has been influenced not only by the number of unemployed workers but also by changes in the labor force, including retirements and an aging workforce.
From July 2025 to July 2026, Washington added approximately 16,100 jobs overall. Private-sector employment increased by roughly 22,500 jobs while public-sector employment declined by about 1,400.
One major question is whether Seattle’s World Cup matches helped temporarily boost the numbers. ESD says some June and July employment growth occurred in leisure and hospitality as restaurants, hotels and other businesses staffed up for the influx of visitors.
Washington In Focus Daily examines the latest employment numbers, what’s driving the falling unemployment rate and whether the World Cup-related hiring boom will last.
