DESCRIPTION
A longtime Seattle Times sportswriter has resigned after editors declined to publish his column featuring two Washington female athletes who oppose competing against biological males.
Matt Calkins spent 11 years at The Seattle Times before submitting a column centered on student athletes who have become prominent voices in Washington's debate over girls sports. After editors ultimately decided not to publish the piece, Calkins says he gave his notice.
Calkins later published his own account of why he resigned, setting off a wave of national attention. In an interview with Washington In Focus Daily, he discusses what happened behind the scenes and argues that there is a growing disconnect between newsrooms and the general public.
Calkins also says mainstream media outlets should place greater emphasis on "thought diversity" and argues that many readers are looking for perspectives they aren't getting from traditional newsrooms.
The Seattle Times declined to comment on the controversy.
