DESCRIPTION
Washington's battle over the income tax repeal initiative is taking another turn, this time with a defamation lawsuit involving government transparency advocate Arthur West and Washington State Republican Party Chairman Jim Walsh.
West has been challenging the Public Investment Impact Disclosure, or PIID, that will appear alongside Initiative 645, the Let's Go Washington-backed measure seeking to repeal Washington's newly adopted income tax.
After West's initial court challenge was rejected, Walsh publicly criticized how the case was handled and argued that Thurston County Superior Court Judge Chris Lanese had taken advantage of West, who represented himself in the proceedings.
Now, West is suing Walsh and the Washington State Republican Party for defamation over statements made about him and his handling of the case.
Walsh is standing by his criticism, telling The Center Square that his focus remains on what he considers Judge Lanese's conduct during the original PIID litigation.
And there's another twist: Judge Chris Lanese has been assigned to hear West's lawsuit against Walsh.
Meanwhile, the underlying battle over the PIID and Initiative 645 continues, with a Washington Supreme Court panel set to review West's emergency motion as the November election approaches.
Watch Washington in Focus Daily for continuing coverage of Initiative 645, Washington's income tax fight, the state Supreme Court and government accountability.
