WA GOP Chairman Jim Walsh Sued by Arthur West Over Court Comments

Washington's income tax repeal fight has taken another dramatic turn as government transparency activist Arthur West files a defamation lawsuit against Washington State Republican Party Chairman Jim Walsh. West is suing Walsh and the Washington State GOP over public comments Walsh made following West's unsuccessful legal challenge to the Public Investment Impact Disclosure, or PIID, that will accompany Initiative 645 on Washington's November ballot. I-645, backed by Let's Go Washington, seeks to repeal Washington state's newly enacted income tax. Walsh criticized West's handling of the PIID court challenge and suggested Judge Chris Lanese had "tricked" West during the Thurston County Superior Court proceedings. West strongly disputes that characterization, arguing that he made no procedural errors and demanding a public retraction and apology. West has now escalated the dispute into a defamation lawsuit seeking damages as well as what his complaint describes as an unambiguous retraction and correction of the statements. Walsh, meanwhile, argues that West's lawsuit is a distraction and says scrutiny should instead remain focused on Judge Lanese's conduct during the original PIID hearing. The legal battle now comes with another unusual twist: West v. Walsh is scheduled to go before Judge Chris Lanese—the same judge at the center of Walsh's public criticism.
