DESCRIPTION
A major Second Amendment case involving Illinois' ban on semi-automatic firearms is now before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case, Vermontes v. Cook County, challenges Cook County's long-standing ban on semi-automatic firearms and has been consolidated with a Connecticut case involving a gun and magazine ban. The plaintiffs argue that AR-15-style rifles are commonly owned firearms protected by the Second Amendment.
Greg Bishop breaks down the latest filing from the plaintiffs, their argument that millions of Americans own AR-15s and similar semi-automatic rifles, and the legal question of whether firearms in common use can be banned.
The segment also covers a separate New Mexico case involving the state's seven-day firearm waiting period, new federal rules for restoring firearm rights, and an ATF cybersecurity incident involving standalone systems.
The Supreme Court briefing continues, with the respondents' briefs on the merits due October 21.
