Thousands of WA State Workers Walk Out as Seattle Teacher Strike Looms

Thousands of Washington state employees walked off the job as a major public-sector labor fight unfolds across Washington—and Seattle teachers could soon be next. Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) members held walkouts at more than 100 worksites as the union pushes for a new contract covering approximately 52,000 taxpayer-funded public employees. Workers are demanding pay increases, affordable healthcare, expanded paid time off, compensatory time and cash-out provisions, management accountability, workload and staffing changes, additional training and continuing education, tuition reimbursement and hazard pay. The state employee contract fight comes as Washington faces significant budget concerns heading into 2027. Governor Bob Ferguson has called on state agencies to identify potential spending cuts and efficiencies while saying his proposed budget will not include new tax increases. Meanwhile, another major union showdown is unfolding at Seattle Public Schools. The Seattle Education Association and Seattle Public Schools are approaching a contract deadline with the possibility of a teacher strike threatening the start of school for approximately 50,000 students. The union is seeking additional compensation, smaller class sizes and other contract changes while the Seattle School District faces an estimated $87 million to $100 million budget deficit. Seattle Public Schools is proposing guaranteed salary increases of 2.6% for the current school year, 3.6% the following year and 2.6% in 2028-29—nearly 9% over three years. Those increases would come in addition to annual salary-step increases that average approximately 4% per year. With thousands of Washington public employees already participating in labor action and Seattle teachers facing a potential strike, the disputes raise larger questions about government spending, public-sector compensation, union contracts, Washington's budget problems and the impact on taxpayers and families.
