CDL Fraud Crackdown: 110 Driving Schools Shut Down by Federal Government

The federal government is cracking down on fraud and safety violations in the commercial driver's license system, shutting down 110 driving schools accused of major violations and another 160 schools with serious compliance problems. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says investigators found schools passing drivers who could not meet English proficiency requirements, unlicensed instructors training truck drivers, and schools without adequate facilities to properly train drivers. Federal officials say one sample uncovered 2,000 licenses issued without English proficiency, while more than 28,000 commercial drivers have been placed out of service for English-language violations since June 2025. The crackdown is also targeting third-party CDL testers, with federal officials announcing targeted investigations and a nationwide audit of skills testers.
