Seattle Teachers Avoid Strike as District Faces $87M+ Budget Shortfall

Seattle Public Schools avoided a teacher strike at the last minute, allowing students to begin the 2026-27 school year on schedule after Seattle teachers and the district reached a new contract agreement. The Seattle Education Association and Seattle Public Schools announced a tentative agreement Tuesday night, ending the immediate threat of a teacher strike in Washington state's largest school district. But major questions remain about the financial cost of the new Seattle teachers contract as the district faces an estimated $87 million to $100 million budget shortfall. Seattle teachers had been seeking additional pay along with smaller class sizes, increased special education staffing and other workplace changes. The district had repeatedly warned that its severe financial constraints limited what it could offer the union. Washington Policy Center's Vicki Murray argues that simply increasing education spending does not guarantee better student outcomes and says policymakers should focus more closely on where education dollars are being spent and whether that spending translates into improved student performance. Meanwhile, Tumwater schools also opened on time after the district reached a last-minute agreement with its paraeducators. Paraeducators had threatened to strike over compensation before reaching and ratifying a new contract Tuesday.
