Mark Schoesler, a Republican from Ritzville and longtime member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, is questioning whether filling the six-figure DNR position should be a priority as Washington faces significant budget pressures. Schoesler argues that DNR should be focusing limited taxpayer resources on its core responsibilities, particularly following a devastating Washington wildfire season that placed additional pressure on firefighting resources. He also questions why the agency is continuing its search when the position's responsibilities are currently being covered. The scrutiny comes as Washington lawmakers prepare for the 2027 legislative session and another major debate over state spending, taxes, government programs and how to address the state's projected budget shortfall.
