A longtime Seattle restaurant is closing after more than 50 years as its owner points to rising rent, higher labor costs, construction disruptions and the increasingly difficult economics of operating a small business in downtown Seattle.
Luigi’s Italian Eatery in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square will close its doors September 19. Owner Angela Williams says the family business reached a point where it could no longer absorb rising expenses, including what she described as a 40% rent increase.
Luigi’s has deep roots in Seattle. Williams’ late husband, Luigi, helped establish Seattle’s Little Italy and at one point the family operated several restaurants within just a few blocks. After Luigi died in 2017, Williams continued operating the business through COVID, rising costs and major changes in downtown Seattle.
Williams told The Center Square that the restaurant repeatedly changed menus and adjusted its business in an effort to survive, but eventually had to confront whether it could financially make it through another winter.
“If you’re digging a hole, the first rule is to stop digging,” Williams said.
The closure also raises questions about the economic health of Pioneer Square following Seattle’s World Cup matches. Businesses near the stadiums anticipated a major surge in customers, but Williams says Luigi’s did just $350 in business during the first match day after food trucks unexpectedly lined the nearby alley. The restaurant closed at 5 p.m. despite expecting one of its busiest days.
Williams says rising Seattle wages, higher food and operating costs, expensive rent, construction projects, parking problems and insufficient customer traffic have combined to make operating the restaurant unsustainable.
Luigi’s is also not the only longtime Pioneer Square business to close, raising broader concerns about Seattle’s small-business environment and the future of one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.
Washington in Focus Daily will continue examining the challenges facing Seattle businesses, including rising costs, taxes, regulations, wages, crime, construction and the changing downtown economy.
