GOP Questions Secret Negotiations With Unions + Seattle’s Rising Costs Claim Another Iconic Business

Washington state workers are demanding higher pay and expanded benefits as contract negotiations with Gov. Bob Ferguson’s administration intensify, raising new questions about government spending, taxpayer costs and transparency in Olympia. The Washington Federation of State Employees, representing roughly 52,000 state workers, is seeking increased compensation, more affordable healthcare, expanded paid time off, hazard pay, improved staffing, workload protections, training opportunities and other benefits as negotiations continue over the next two-year contract. Washington GOP Chairman Jim Walsh is criticizing the bargaining process, arguing that negotiations between state employee unions and the governor’s office happen behind closed doors with taxpayers lacking direct representation. Walsh is calling for greater transparency and floating changes to how Washington negotiates public employee contracts. Meanwhile, another longtime Seattle business is closing its doors. Luigi’s Italian Eatery in Pioneer Square is preparing to close after more than 50 years. Owner Angela Williams says rising rent, higher labor costs, construction disruptions and other expenses have made operating the iconic Seattle restaurant financially unsustainable. Williams says the restaurant faced a roughly 40% rent increase and struggled despite hopes that the World Cup would deliver a major boost to Pioneer Square businesses. Luigi’s is now scheduled to close September 19. Finally, Seattle is facing new legal scrutiny over its P-Patch community gardening program. Pacific Legal Foundation is questioning Seattle’s policy of prioritizing access to public garden plots for applicants from certain racial and ethnic groups. The legal organization argues the race-conscious policy raises constitutional concerns under the 14th Amendment and has asked Seattle officials to change it.
