DESCRIPTION
A Washington high school wrestler's girls sports and Title IX lawsuit is heading to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit as Kallie Keeler and her mother seek emergency relief before the upcoming wrestling season. Keeler, a Puyallup School District wrestler who has competed in the sport since childhood, alleges she was sexually assaulted during a December 2025 girls wrestling match after being unknowingly matched against a transgender opponent. Keeler and her mother say they were not informed beforehand that her opponent was biologically male. Alliance Defending Freedom is representing Keeler and her mother in their federal lawsuit challenging Washington's policies governing transgender athletes in girls sports. After a federal district court denied preliminary relief, ADF filed an emergency motion with the Ninth Circuit. Keeler and her mother are seeking advance notice before she is matched against a biologically male opponent, the ability to opt out without being penalized, and broader relief under Title IX concerning participation in girls wrestling. ADF attorney Hal Frampton says the emergency timetable is important because another Washington high school wrestling season is approaching and Keeler wants to continue participating in the sport. The case follows a separate criminal investigation into Keeler's allegation from the December 2025 wrestling match. The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office ultimately declined to charge Keeler's opponent, concluding prosecutors could not prove a criminal offense beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutors cited Washington case law involving consent to foreseeable physical contact during athletic competition. The handling of Keeler's initial report has also generated separate legal scrutiny. Keeler and her mother reported the alleged assault to school officials shortly after the match, but law enforcement was not notified until weeks later. Two Puyallup School District officials have since faced charges related to Washington's mandatory reporting requirements. Now the immediate legal battle shifts to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as Keeler and her mother seek emergency protections before wrestling season begins. Washington in Focus Daily breaks down the Kallie Keeler case, Washington girls wrestling, transgender athletes in girls sports, Title IX, the WIAA, Puyallup School District, parental notification, the Ninth Circuit appeal and what could happen next in this closely watched Washington sports and education lawsuit. #GirlsSports #TitleIX #KallieKeeler #WashingtonState #WIAA #Wrestling #NinthCircuit #HighSchoolSports #WashingtonNews #Puyallup #ParentalRights #TransgenderAthletes #TheCenterSquare
