DESCRIPTION
A Washington mother says she has not seen her daughter since November 2025 after a family dispute involving gender identity, parental rights and her daughter's desired gender transition. Jodie Holman says her daughter's former school district in Washington helped connect the teenager with outside organizations as the family struggled over how to address her gender identity and treatment. Holman says her daughter had experienced serious mental health struggles and that the family had already sought individual counseling and family therapy. According to Holman, the family wanted to proceed cautiously with decisions involving a potential gender transition while continuing to work with therapists. Holman alleges that school officials helped connect her daughter with outside organizations, including Oasis Youth Center and TeamChild, and that a school counselor later testified against the parents during legal proceedings involving custody. These are Holman's allegations about her family's experience and the circumstances surrounding her daughter's separation from the family. The case now has a connection to a major parental rights battle before the U.S. Supreme Court. Jodie Holman is not one of the plaintiffs in International Partners for Ethical Care v. Ferguson, but she joined an amicus curiae, or friend-of-the-court, brief supporting the Washington parents challenging state laws involving runaway minors, parental notification and access to certain shelter and mental health services. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear International Partners for Ethical Care v. Ferguson, with oral arguments scheduled for December 7, 2026. The immediate question before the Supreme Court concerns Article III standing: whether the Washington parents challenging the laws have established the legal standing necessary to bring their constitutional claims in federal court. The Ninth Circuit previously upheld the dismissal of the lawsuit for lack of standing. The plaintiffs are asking the Supreme Court to reverse that decision and allow their constitutional challenge to proceed. Washington in Focus examines Jodie Holman's story, Washington parental rights, schools and parents, gender identity policies, gender transition, runaway minors, parental notification, International Partners for Ethical Care v. Ferguson, the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Supreme Court, SCOTUS and the national debate over the rights of parents and the role of state government. #ParentalRights #SCOTUS #WashingtonState #ParentsRights #GenderPolicy #GenderIdentity #SupremeCourt #WashingtonNews #WashingtonPolitics #NinthCircuit #TheCenterSquare #WashingtonInFocus
