DESCRIPTION
Washington state workers have reached major tentative contract agreements with the state as the October 1 deadline for public employee collective bargaining agreements approaches.
The Washington Federation of State Employees, or WFSE, announced that its General Government bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with Washington state on a new 2027–2029 union contract.
The agreement affects approximately 42,000 Washington state government workers, who will have an opportunity to vote on whether to ratify the tentative contract.
The Washington Public Employees Association has also announced tentative agreements during the current bargaining cycle as Washington state employee unions work to complete negotiations ahead of the October deadline.
But the agreements are also renewing a debate over taxpayer transparency and Washington state's collective bargaining process.
Washington GOP Chair Jim Walsh argues taxpayers deserve greater representation and transparency during negotiations because state employee wages, benefits and other compensation are ultimately funded through the state budget.
The Office of Financial Management negotiates collective bargaining agreements with state employee unions as Washington prepares its next two-year state budget. Final agreements must be submitted by October 1 for their compensation and benefit provisions to be considered as part of the state's budget process.
How much will Washington's new state worker contracts cost taxpayers? What wage increases, benefits or other compensation changes are included? And how much information should taxpayers and lawmakers receive while state employee union contracts are being negotiated?
Washington in Focus examines the new WFSE tentative agreement, Washington state worker contracts, public employee unions, collective bargaining, taxpayer costs, government transparency, the Office of Financial Management, Gov. Bob Ferguson's administration, Jim Walsh, Washington's state budget and the upcoming 2027 Washington legislative session.
