Katie Wilson ABANDONS Homeless Shelter Promise as Seattle Faces Budget Challenges

DESCRIPTION
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is scaling back her plan to rapidly expand homeless shelter capacity as the city faces budget and implementation challenges.
Earlier this year, Wilson announced a goal of opening 1,000 new units of shelter and emergency housing with supportive services in Seattle. Her administration is now moving forward with an updated plan that would deliver almost 1,000 additional shelter beds by the end of 2027.
The change represents a significant shift in the timeline for one of Wilson's major homelessness initiatives.
The development comes as Pallet, the Everett-based company that manufactured shelters for Seattle's new Bayside Enhanced Shelter in Interbay, has announced it is shutting down.
Seattle opened the Interbay site with 75 Pallet Shelter units as part of the city's effort to rapidly move people experiencing homelessness indoors. Pallet says that since its founding in 2017, its shelter villages created more than 6,000 beds across the United States and Canada.
The Interbay project is also raising questions about the cost of Seattle's approach to tiny-home shelters. The Center Square's reporting examines how the project's costs changed as it moved from its initial estimates to completion.
What does Pallet's closure mean for Seattle's tiny-home strategy? And how will the city expand shelter capacity while dealing with budget constraints and the changing economics of emergency housing?
Today's Washington in Focus examines Katie Wilson's updated homelessness plan, Seattle's shelter expansion, the Interbay tiny-home village and the closure of Pallet.
The Center Square continues to cover Seattle homelessness, city spending, public safety, government accountability and the policies affecting Washington taxpayers.
