DESCRIPTION
A Washington high-school wrestler is asking the U.S. Supreme Court for emergency relief in a major Title IX and girls sports case as new sponsor-released polling shows 56% support for Initiative 638, Washington's girls sports ballot measure.
Kallie Keeler and her mother, Stephanie Brown, are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in their legal challenge involving Washington's policies governing participation in girls school sports.
Attorneys with Alliance Defending Freedom filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court after a federal district court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit declined to provide the interim relief Keeler and her mother requested.
Keeler alleges she was sexually assaulted during a December 2025 wrestling match against a transgender athlete. Keeler was 15 years old at the time.
Pierce County prosecutors later declined to file criminal charges against the opposing athlete.
Keeler's mother says she reported the alleged incident to school officials and provided video evidence shortly afterward. Separate legal proceedings have involved school officials over allegations related to mandatory reporting requirements.
Keeler and her mother are challenging Washington's sports policies under Title IX while also raising parental-rights claims.
Their emergency Supreme Court application seeks protection that would allow Keeler to participate in girls wrestling without being required to compete against male athletes while the litigation proceeds. Her mother is also seeking notification before Keeler is matched against a male opponent.
Alliance Defending Freedom argues Washington's policies violate Title IX protections for female athletes.
Keeler already missed the previous wrestling season during the dispute. Her attorney Hal Frampton says another season is now at risk as the next wrestling season approaches, arguing that Keeler's limited high-school athletic career makes expedited court action necessary.
The Supreme Court fight comes as Washington voters prepare to decide Initiative 638 in the November 3 election.
I-638 concerns participation in girls K-12 athletics and would require policies prohibiting students the initiative defines as biologically male from competing with or against female students in certain athletic activities intended for female students only.
Now, new polling released by I-638 sponsor Let's Go Washington provides an early look at voter sentiment surrounding the girls sports initiative.
According to the adjusted results presented by Let's Go Washington, 56% of respondents support Initiative 638, while 24% oppose the measure and 22% remain undecided.
The sponsor also released results broken down by party affiliation before adjusting for party share.
The new I-638 polling comes less than a month before Washington voters decide the girls sports initiative on November 3 and as the broader debate over transgender athletes, Title IX and female sports continues in Washington and nationally.
Let's Go Washington also released new polling on Initiative 001, a parental-rights measure appearing on the November ballot.
According to the group's adjusted results, 51% support I-001 while 32% remain undecided.
The sponsor's party breakdown presented in the survey shows 66% of Republican respondents supporting I-001, along with 47% of Democrats and 45% of independents. The polling also shows significant numbers of undecided voters, including 39% of independents.
The new numbers offer an early snapshot of voter sentiment surrounding two of the major initiatives appearing on Washington's November 3 ballot.
Washington voters will decide I-638 on girls sports, I-001 on parental rights and I-645 concerning repeal of Washington's new individual income tax provisions, along with numerous state and local races.
Today's report examines Kallie Keeler, the U.S. Supreme Court, Title IX, Washington girls sports, transgender athletes, parental rights, Initiative 638, I-638 polling, Initiative 001, I-001 polling and the November 2026 Washington election.
