DESCRIPTION
Vice President JD Vance is accusing Microsoft of abusing the H-1B visa system and replacing American workers with foreign employees, announcing a suspension of the company's PERM labor-certification processing amid an ongoing federal investigation. During a White House briefing, Vance cited approximately 6,000 Microsoft layoffs, 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards, arguing that the company's hiring practices disadvantage American workers. Microsoft is pushing back against those claims. In a statement to The Center Square, Microsoft said approximately 80% of its 6,000 H-1B filings last fiscal year involved extensions or status changes for existing employees, not new hires. The company said filings for new employees represented only 1% of its U.S. workforce. The Trump administration is also scrutinizing other major technology and outsourcing companies, including Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini. The controversy raises new questions about H-1B visas, foreign worker hiring, American technology jobs and federal immigration enforcement.
