Could Illinois eventually split into two states? Voters in 12 Illinois counties will weigh in on whether their counties should pursue separating from Cook County, home to Chicago. According to Illinois Separation organizer Laurette Newlin, 33 counties have already approved similar resolutions. She says previous votes saw 74% support in counties that approved them. But these votes are nonbinding. They won't split Illinois into two states or immediately change county boundaries. Newlin says the votes are an early step in a longer process that could eventually require state and congressional approval.
