DESCRIPTION
Washington voters are preparing to decide whether to repeal the state's new 9.9% income tax, but a longtime online resource documenting Washington's income tax voting history is no longer available, according to Jason Mercier of the Mountain States Policy Center.
Mercier says he worked with the Washington Secretary of State's office approximately a decade ago to create a resource page detailing the state's previous income tax votes, including six rejected constitutional amendments.
According to Mercier, the page was recently removed as part of an effort to eliminate obsolete information and servers. He questions whether Washington's history of rejecting income taxes should be considered obsolete, particularly ahead of another statewide vote on income tax policy.
The controversy raises questions about government transparency, public access to historical election information and the ongoing debate over Washington's income tax.
