DESCRIPTION
Seattle's fentanyl controversy continues as Battlefield Addiction co-founder Art Dahlen fires back at LEAD co-founder Lisa Daugaard over a disputed question about fentanyl use inside a family home.
The disagreement began during a Housing First vs. Recovery First panel discussion at a We Heart Seattle fundraiser, where Dahlen asked Daugaard how a parent should respond if their child continued smoking fentanyl inside the home.
Daugaard, a co-creator of Seattle's Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program, responded by discussing the principles of harm reduction and the importance of taking the dangers of drug use seriously.
Following criticism of the exchange, Daugaard provided The Center Square with a clarification, explaining that she would neither approve of her child's fentanyl use nor evict her child from the home.
But Art Dahlen says that was not the question he asked.
In a new interview with The Center Square's Carleen Johnson, Dahlen disputes Daugaard's characterization of his original question.
Dahlen says he never asked whether Daugaard would evict her child or celebrate fentanyl use. Instead, he says his question focused on whether parents should establish boundaries prohibiting fentanyl use inside their homes.
"I never mentioned the word great," Dahlen says, while explaining why he believes his original question was misrepresented.
Dahlen argues that parents have a responsibility to protect their children from the dangers of fentanyl and that prohibiting drug use inside a family home should not automatically be characterized as eviction.
The disagreement has intensified an ongoing debate over Seattle's approach to addiction, homelessness, harm reduction and taxpayer-funded housing programs.
Housing First advocates generally emphasize providing stable housing without requiring sobriety as a precondition. Recovery First advocates emphasize treatment, sobriety and recovery-oriented expectations.
The exchange raises broader questions about addiction treatment, parental boundaries, public safety and Washington state's response to the fentanyl crisis.
