DESCRIPTION
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is facing questions about police staffing, violent crime and her administration's public safety budget as concerns grow over Seattle's approach to policing.
The Center Square's Tim Clouser questioned Wilson directly about whether the city will actually hire the police officers included in its budget and whether Seattle residents can expect meaningful improvements in public safety.
Wilson's budget provides for approximately 1,250 police officers, but Clouser challenged whether the city's hiring projections would deliver that staffing level.
The mayor defended her administration's police recruitment efforts, saying Seattle has hired more than 100 officers this year and continues to receive strong interest from applicants.
Wilson acknowledged a bottleneck in police training but said hiring itself is not the city's main challenge.
When asked whether Seattle would have more police officers two years from now than it does today, Wilson answered yes.
SEATTLE PUBLIC SAFETY SURVEY RAISES CONCERNS
Clouser also questioned the mayor about a Seattle Metro Chamber survey indicating widespread concern over public safety.
According to the figures cited during the exchange, 75% of survey respondents said they lacked confidence that Seattle has an effective public safety plan, while 50% said they were considering leaving the city.
Wilson responded that public safety remains a top priority for her administration and said the city's budget reflects that commitment.
She emphasized neighborhood-based public safety strategies designed to address persistent problems in communities including Rainier Beach, North Aurora, Belltown and Little Saigon.
The exchange follows another violent weekend in Seattle, including several shootings and the fatal shooting of a gas station clerk near the Space Needle.
Wilson also addressed the weekend violence, describing gun violence as a major concern.
The mayor's approach to public safety, police staffing and neighborhood crime is expected to remain under scrutiny as Seattle City Council members review her budget.
The Center Square continues to examine the city's police hiring plans, public safety spending and the effectiveness of Seattle's crime prevention strategy.
