DESCRIPTION
A Washington girls' wrestling dispute has reached the U.S. Supreme Court after Alliance Defending Freedom filed an emergency petition challenging the application of the state's school athletics policies, according to ADF attorney Kate Anderson.
Anderson says student wrestler Kelly Keeler was matched against an athlete she describes as male during a school wrestling competition without advance notice. Anderson also alleges that Keeler was sexually assaulted during the match.
According to Anderson, when Keeler and her mother asked the school district to prevent future matchups against male athletes, school officials said Washington state policy would allow similar matchups without advance notification.
Anderson says Alliance Defending Freedom sought relief in federal district court and the Ninth Circuit before filing an emergency petition with the U.S. Supreme Court.
The attorney argues the dispute raises questions about student safety, privacy, fairness and Washington's policies governing transgender participation in girls' school sports.
