DESCRIPTION
A union-backed political action committee is targeting five Washington Supreme Court candidates ahead of the November election, prompting Judge Dave Larson to speak out against political attack mailers in the state's nonpartisan judicial races.
The PAC, Beware the Attack on Our Courts, receives funding from public employee unions including SEIU 775 and the Washington Education Association (WEA). Its campaign warns of a conservative effort to take control of the Washington Supreme Court.
In an exclusive interview with The Center Square, Judge Dave Larson, who is challenging Gov. Bob Ferguson-appointed Justice Theo Angelis, disputes the PAC's allegations and argues that political attacks discourage qualified candidates from running for judicial office.
Future 42 co-founder Sally Poliak also responds, denying allegations that her organization has engaged in electioneering for Larson or the other judicial candidates.
With five of Washington's nine Supreme Court seats on the ballot, the controversy raises questions about political spending, judicial independence and the future of Washington's highest court.
