John Deere has agreed to make its repair software available to farmers and independent repair shops for the next 10 years, settling a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission along with Wisconsin, Illinois, and two other states. The lawsuit alleged that Deere restricted access to the software needed to diagnose and repair many of its tractors and farm machines, effectively limiting repairs to authorized dealers. Supporters of the right-to-repair movement argued those restrictions increased costs and reduced competition for farmers and independent repair businesses.
